Definition of a hotel, according to Solly Assa

The emergence of the hotels is the result of the overall socio-economic, technological, cultural and social development. Solly Assa, an experienced hotel developer, says that hotels are here to stay, as the hotel appears to replace the existing hosing properties and will respond to the higher and more complex needs of consumers. Hotels originally were called urban palaces of wealthy aristocrats and industrialists, in which they freely placed their guests. In early XIX century, many of them started commercial activity. As a response to these palaces, in the middle of the XIX century in many European capitals (like Paris, Vienna, Berlin) new hotels have begun with construction. The word "hotel" was first used in Paris from 1669. The so-called objects "hotel-garni" (translated - a big house) rented apartments by day, and became shelters for travelers by night. These hotels are characterized by their attractiveness and luxury. In England, the name "hotel" enters into service in 1760. At the beginning of the XIX century hotel managers were created, as well as receptionists and staff in uniforms. With the development of tourism in the late XIX century, the term hotel definitely strengthened and become widely used.

Solly Assa starts this magic journey in the XIX century with 1869, the first Alliance of hotel owners. It grows in International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA) in 1947. The Hotelier Association of New York was founded in 1878 and the American Hotel Association in 1910. Other international hotel organizations soon follow…

In defining the term hotel, different countries use certain criteria relating to: the purpose, the minimum number of rooms that should be available, existing sanitary facilities and other amenities to stay. But, Assa says that this question for the professional determination of the term "hotel" was already in focus of the International Association of Hoteliers (Budapest - 1926. Rome - 1929., London, etc.). At the Congress in Lucerne (1953), the association decided to create the following definition:

"A tourist hotel is a facility for accommodation, designed to receive guests who intend to stay for a time, and to which facility for food with more or less developed form are added. The hotel should respond to the requests of all types civilized people as progress made is made in the area of lifestyle, hygiene and food. "

Among the many definitions and introductions of a hotel used in different countries, Assa gives a universal definition that is quite common: "Hotel is an object for receiving guests for a short time, which provides civilized living conditions and beds, might provide food and other services and goods related to the needs of those staying in it."

The main activity of the hotel is providing accommodation services i.e. issuing furnished rooms for accommodation and leisure. The most important additional service are dining, for which the hotel is accompanied with facilities for food cooking and dining. That trend has spread and strengthened over time.

Even the smallest (family hotels) offer breakfast and dinner. Modern facilities for residence are more complex and provide cooking and dining with various capacities (hotel-restaurant complex). As an expert in the hospitality and hotel business, Assa says that the "hotelier occupation along with cooking and dining" is both a functional, technological and organizational type of business.
